Shohei Ohtani might be the best baseball player on the planet, but for at least one at bat, he was bested by a backup catcher. The catcher, Venezuelan Jhonny Pereda, managed to strikeout the 3-time MVP in the eighth inning of the Dodgers 19-2 win against the Athletics on Thursday night.

Shohei Ohtani had a monster game on Thursday night as the Los Angeles Dodgers blew out the Athletics 19-2 at Dodger Stadium. Ohtani hit home runs in back-to-back innings to move into a tie for the league lead during the victory.

It’s always fun to see athletes forced to play out of position, but there was nothing quite like seeing A’s catcher Jhonny Pereda take the mound to pitch to Shohei Ohtani. Arguably the greatest player in baseball simply had no answers to to Pereda’s stuff in one of the most staggeringly weird at bats of the year.
